District 7 Spring Meeting Minutes

The spring meeting of the District 7 Agricultural Educators was held on April 18, 2012 at Westfall High School. The meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by President-Rick Metzger.

BUSINESS MEETING MINUTES!!

• Previous Minutes are on the web.

• Treasurer’s Report
• Balance as of April 18^th is $408.72.
• Reminder that dues are 50 cents per member each year, and if you haven’t paid for this year yet, you need to do so right away.
• Moved by Susan Metzger to approve report. Report will stand as read.
• REMINDER—Susan is not at Logan Elm anymore so please forward all paperwork and dues to her at Pickaway Ross.
• SEE NEW BUSINESS FOR IMPORTANT CHANGES.

• Chair—Rick Metzger
• Rick summarized the OAAE minutes that was emailed to everyone. A few things to highlight are:
• OSU has 20 student teachers for the fall.
• We have a new Department chair at OSU—Dr. Gary Straquadine
• The COLT Conference will not be held this fall. Rather a new conference, OLLC, Ohio Legislative Leadership Conference, will be held on Sept. 26^th at the Statehouse. More details to come.
• Ike Kershaw is now serving as advisor to FCCLA, BPA, DECA, in addition to FFA.
• Make sure you take a look at those minutes as there are a lot of useful updates in them.

• Legislative-Scott Sharp
• Scott updated us on the following:
• Reminder to watch emails in regards to Legislative items.
• Don’t forget to invite legislators to your banquet or large community events, especially with their re-districting that is going on.
• Chris Gardner would like input in regards to the STEM school that is being proposed for Springfield, which currently has no Ag program but we want to stress the importance that the STEM have all components of a traditional Ag Program, so as to no jeopardize our programs in the future.
• The COLT Conference is changing to the OLLC and will be at the statehouse but the state officers will still be in charge of this conference.
• Concerns were expressed in regards to parking and security of students when the teacher is the bus driver as well.
• OAAE is still working closer with Farm Bureau and they are hoping that you are starting to see the benefits of doing so.
• They are currently working on details with the new Child Labor Law.
• Membership
• Dues will be going down this year!
• There will be a window to cut off dues for this year and start dues for next year.
• The new payment schedule for 2012-2013 is April 1^st to March 31^st.

• There will also be constitutional changes to be voted upon at this summer’s meeting.

• CDE—Tom Holton
• Reminder about the upcoming CDE online tests for this year.
• There is an upcoming soils meeting to finalize changes for next year. It currently sounds like the soil survey will change to copies of online soil surveys with questions to answer.
• Public Speaking revisions will happen this summer, especially extemporaneous. If you are interested in serving on that committee please let Tom know.
• They are in the infancy stages of an Energy CDE and are working with the national to develop this.
• Spring CDE’s for 2013 will be April 6^th with no dairy cattle because the Dairy Expo has moved to the day before Easter.
• The State Dairy Cattle contest will be April 13^th at ATI in the morning with a 2 hour educational program after contest while the contest is being scored then they will have the finals in the afternoon. There will be no linear evaluation at the contest since Nationals is doing away with it.
• There is a Fall Activities meeting upcoming on May 24^th to discuss changes for 2013-14.

• It was moved by Chris Turner and 2^nd by Jeff Tilley to move to get back state worksheets and answer keys for all contests. Motion passed for Tom to take this to delegate council.

• Mentor—Cassie Palsgrove
• Reported that all new teachers seem to be getting along good.

• Camp board—Cassie Palsgrove
• Reminder that registration is open and please encourage your kids to attend.
• They will be conducting a fundraiser for the new building at camp.

• Trophies—Jeff Tilley
• Just a reminder to check the website for correct spellings and results.

• FFA Advisory Committee—Rachel Garrett
• None

• Alumni—Jeff Ellis
• Not in attendance, so no report.

• ODE Update—Kevin Williams
• Program Approvals
• Completed CTE-26 due June 1^st
• New Articulations are available with Wilmington College and ATI
• Addition of new courses in Food Science, Biotech, and Natural Resources Pathways.

• Inquiry Based Institute
• Two Days at HOT Conference—June 13^th and 14^th
• Follow-up meeting November 2^nd and March 2013
• Only 20 spots available
• Just register for the institute when registering for HOT
• Contact Kevin for more info

• Host the FFA Display at the 2012 Ohio State Fair
• Asking for either 1 chapter for a whole day or 2 chapters for ½ day
• Need 4 kids to help with 3 hole putting course
• Need 4 kids to help with the Ohio Soybean Council activities
• Free Admission into the fair and lunch
• Please schedule with Kevin by June 1^st

• Horticulture Taxonomy Workshop
• July 9^th and 10^th at Clark State Community College
• Open to all instructors teaching courses in the Hort. Pathway
• Industry Tours of Bell Nurseries and Meadow View Growers
• Best practices sessions and lesson sharing
• Presentations from State and National Hort. Associations

• Dr. Steve Gratz is conducting a “Student Success Story”
• They will select 1 Ag Student who is a senior that is planning on going to college in Ag to represent our programs.
• Send your nominations to Kevin before May 8^th.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

· The following motion was brought back on the table from the previous meeting.

o Cassie Palsgrove moved that schools who fail to pay district dues are ineligible to participate in district events the following year. Jeff Tilley 2^nd. Tom Holton postponed definitely until this meeting. This motion did fail.

· District Meeting at State Convention

o Cassie Palsgrove moved Jeff Tilley 2^nd moved to meet at 1:30 p.m. in the Bricker Building to vote for District 7 President. Motion passed.

o Please have 2 voting delegates from each chapter in attendance.

NEW BUSINESS

· Jeff Tilley moved and Steve Priest 2^nd to move that the District no longer pay for lunch at District Evaluations. Motion passed.

· Jeff Tilley moved and Rachel Garrett 2^nd to move that chapter that want to purchase 3-5^th place team plaques be allowed to purchase them through the district by contacting Jeff at no cost to the district. Motion passed.

· Jeff Tilley moved and Loren Young 2^nd to move that we purchase $10 gift cards for all district judges this year instead of the previous $25. Motion passed.

· Scott Sharp moved and Jeff Tilley 2^nd that all District 7 dues need to be paid by the national deadline of November 30^th or it will result in failure to compete in future district contests for 12 months. After a lot of discussion, Tom Holton moved to postpone indefinitely. Bret King 2^nd it. Postpone indefinitely failed. Then Brian Breece moved to amend by striking out ineligible for 12 months and Loren Young 2^nd. Amendment failed. Then vote was taken and the motion passed with the verbal understanding that common sense would overrule if an extenuating circumstance beyond the teachers control would happen to occur.

· Upcoming District Dates

o Steve Priest moved to accept the proposed District Calendar for 2012-2013. Susan Metzger 2^nd. Motion passed.

o Motion to adjourn by Jeff Tilley 2^nd by Steve Priest. Motion Passed. Meeting adjourned at 6:45 p.m.
